UD99 Feature:
Chris Cunningham
Come on My Selector, Squarepusher
Come to Daddy, Aphex Twin

The two new videos featured on UD99 both revolve around little girls who like to kick some butt. Is this an odd interest of filmmaker Chris Cunningham? I don’t know. What I do know is that Cunningham is a very talented, very odd man. I saw both of the featured videos at the ResFest Digital Film Festival NYC screening. The first, Come to Daddy, named for it’s track by Aphex Twin, which is quite honestly disturbing. Masterfully crafted with amazing organic effects, this video is by far the scariest thing I’ve ever seen in a theatre. For weeks afterwards I had nightmares about little girls all bearing the face of Richard James (Aphex Twin) chanting, "I want your soul!" Not really, but you get the point. If you don’t, go see the video.

The second video by Cunningham, made for the track "Come on My Selector," had the complete opposite effect, which restored my hope that even evil people have a true heart, deep down inside. Watching a 7-year-old Japanese girl kick the butts of her insane asylum wardens was at best redeeming at best, and delightfully revengeful at least. For any genius child who was ever misunderstood (and weren’t we all?) this film acts out our ultimate fantasy: to transfer the minds of our tormentors with that of a dog. The karate chop in the groin isn’t bad either. If you can relate, go see this video, too.

If you’ve come here expecting to see some of our previously featured, award-winning pieces such as God’s of Times Square or Breakdance, check out our newly re-edited moving image archive, where we keep a nicely compiled list of all our features. If you’re interested in seeing how we once made art out of flat text and slowly evolving images, peruse through the Urban Desires original e-zine archive. To keep updated on where were going, sign up for email updates. Now, I know we’ve made unkept promises about delivering updates in the past, but we finally fixed our little technical problem, so re-enter your email address and you really will receive an update. There’s even room for you to praise or bemoan what we’re doing these days. Making some moving images yourself? We’re currently accepting submissions of film, animation and digital experiments. Who knows, UD99 could be the catalyst to your fame and glory.

Thanks,
