Trainspotting

Danny Boyle's surreal roller-coaster ride about a bunch of Edinburgh heroine addicts achieved cult status wherever it opened. Breathlessly visceral and terrifically acted, the film is iconoclastic in its refusal to be judgmental. But, neither does it romanticize. The disturbing bottom line is -- these guys are funny and compelling.
