The dancers link arms and swirl in the cold Venetian night. It is the eighth night of Chanukah, December 13, 1996. The traditional Horah begins. The powerful centrifugal force created by the dance holds the celebrants, the way the walls of the Venice Ghetto have held Jews, interdependent, co-reliant, corralled for almost 500 years.
