In this place I stayed for a time, it was hard to get things you needed -- if it was something other than hay.

I never saw that many horses, really.

Two, now that I think about it.

Two roans, I heard them called.

I never went in those places, because I had no use for what they sold.

I used to like to watch the people that did go in, though.

Then liked to watch them come out.

Once I saw, outside this one store, a man and two girls load a bale onto a blue truck and then the man getting in the cab.

The two girls, one older than the other, got in the back.

One girl eased herself down into the bed, while the other sat on the big bale.

As the man drove the truck away, I watched her begin to disappear, and she did the same to me.

We looked at each other, me squinting my eyes at the sun.

The girl stared at me, but her look was peaceful and kind of interested. What she was interested in I don't know.

She liked, I guess, watching me shrink down to a standing nothing on the road.

It was a long straight road, going towards some town I had no knowledge of, but knew of its existence.
