MYST Interview Header.

4. Who Is "Me" In MYST?

Kyle: Who is 'me' in the game Myst, and will we ever meet us?

Robyn: Think of yourself as, like, finding that book somewhere. It drops on the sidewalk in front of you, it just falls out of space. But it is you.

Rand: The short answer is that 'me' is you. It is. It is not another character.

Kyle: Did you ever cross that bridge? Asking, "who is this person?"

Rand: Oh yeah, we crossed that bridge when it came to...crossing a bridge. At one point you are literally crossing a bridge and down below you see a shadow of the bridge and you don't see a shadow of you, so who are you? We were thinking to ourselves, 'should we put a shadow in there or not?' We came to the conclusion that it took you out of the game more, putting a shadow there. Because you would think, 'that doesn't look like me, I must be somebody else.'

Robyn: And you don't want to be that other person, you want to be yourself there with your own intelligence and your own brain.

Kyle: My favorite times with Myst were when I would turn out the lights and crank up the sound as loud as I could... and occasionally I would actually get spooked.

Rand: We hear that a lot.

Kyle: In my head I'm saying, "it's a stupid computer game, butthead, what are you doing?!" But in reality I was sitting there with the water trickling...and...

(delighted laughter)

Robyn: That's cool. That's really cool, I hope we can do that even more in the second one.

Rand: That's cool to hear because that makes us feel like we accomplished...

Robyn: We are on the right track...even a little bit, we are on the right track.

Rand: You know, there are other parts in Myst where you are going down ladders and you are looking down and you don't see your feet. We thought, will people notice that they are not seeing their feet? Will they...

Kyle: I think five years from now they will. They will look at Myst and say, "oh, how primitive."

Robyn: But whose feet are you going to put there?

Rand: Scan your own feet.
