Some of the paranoia in George Orwell's 1984 is felt again in this well-written adult fairy tale, but there are some chuckles, too, and many stimulating passages. Rain is dirty enough to arouse, but the author's philosophical preoccupations guarantee its respectability. A woman who gives this book to a man might well succeed in mystifying and titillating him -- without appearing to be obviously available.
